2010 turned out to be a pretty good year! The sunspots are slowily coming back, so we had a few nice surprises, especially for the CQWW CW contest. Propagation for that contest were strangely wonderful! Work demands are still taking their toll, especially the travel load. It was really heavy this year, although it's all good news. Business is strong!

Highlights:
Score | Contest | Results |
1,206,672 | ARRL International DX Contest (SSB) | Decent score with only 23 hours operating (unfortunately, no Top Ten!) |
2,211,354 | CQWW DX SSB Contest | Preliminary 8th Place in USA SOA |
2,077,656 | CQWW DX CW Contest | Nowhere near Top Ten, but a great score for me! |
I had to cut short the ARRL DX CW Contest to hop on a plane for a business trip. I didn't expect much, but I made 353 QSOs, far more than I anticipated! The SSB running was also hampered by business trips before and after the contest. I had so many other demands on me over that weekend, I shouldn't have participated at all. I REALLY enjoy this one, though, and I wanted to earn as many points as possible for my beloved Frankford Radio Club. I was only able to put in just over 23 hours total. I missed making my third straight Top Ten finish in this contest, but 1.2 meg over 23 hours makes me happy!
I did a semi-serious effort in the CQ 160m Contests. The weekend of the SSB event was the same weekend of the UBA DX SSB Contest, a nice event sponsored by the Belgian national amateur radio society. I had a little time on Saturday morning, so I scanned around and found some stations calling CQ. I thought I'd give a few of the serious participants a QSO, so I tuned around and worked them. I was having fun, so I found a clear frequency and called CQ myself. That began a stretch of a little over two hours of running Europeans, including many Belgians! It was exciting, but alas, I had to go QRT to do other things. Thank you UBA for a fun event!
The PA QSO Party was a great time this year! I did a bit more CW than usual, which is good, and had a real blast. I was hoping to beat Goody K3NG to regain my Carbon County title. Goody was awesome, as usual, with his QRP operation (QRP ops get a 2x score multiplier in this contest, BTW) and won it again! After looking at both of our scores, it was even more painful! He beat me by a lousy 100 points! One more QSO in my log would have put me over the top!! Congratulations, Goody!!
The CQWW contests were both great ones! It looks like I'll be #8 (or something close) in the Single Operator Assisted category for the United States in the CQWW SSB Contest. Conditions for the CQWW CW Contest were incredible, especially on the low bands. I would have easily beaten my all -time best score in that contest (2,122,809 in 1999) but I was very sick that weekend and I fell a bit short.
I dabbled for only a few hours each in the ARRL 160m and 10m contests. Conditions were excellent for the 160m contest. Not surprisingly, the 10m contest was a struggle. I only spent about 2 1/2 hours on the 10m contest. There was a steady stream of US stations, especially in Florida, although I did make a few European QSOs and the usual stream of South Americans. Gracias & Obrigado!
